{"id":14408,"date":"2022-06-20T09:15:46","date_gmt":"2022-06-20T07:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev.visitrimini.com\/?post_type=punto-interesse&#038;p=14408"},"modified":"2022-06-20T09:15:46","modified_gmt":"2022-06-20T07:15:46","slug":"porta-galliana","status":"publish","type":"punto-interesse","link":"https:\/\/dev.visitrimini.com\/en\/point-of-interest\/porta-galliana\/","title":{"rendered":"Porta Galliana"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the exception of Porta Del Gattolo, inside Sismondo Castle, <strong>Porta Galliana<\/strong>, <strong>built in the 13th century, is the only medieval city gate<\/strong> that can still be recognised.<\/p>\n<p>A link between the city and the port area, along the Marecchia River, <strong>it was included within the city walls<\/strong>, <strong>as shown in the bas-relief by Agostino di Duccio<\/strong> (1449-1455), preserved in the Chapel of the Zodiacal Signs in the Malatesta Temple and identified thanks to the findings of recent archaeological digs, begun in 2017.<\/p>\n<p>As a matter of fact, it was Sigismondo Malatesta who restored the gate in the 15th century. Evidence is a deposit of Malatesta medals found in the early 20th century, used by Sigismondo to indicate the structures he had built or renovated.<br \/>\nIn the 16th century, the gate was closed and replaced by a tower called \u2018Knights&#8217; Tower\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of time, the use of the site of Galliana Gate underwent various changes, which have left still perfectly visible signs: <strong>the traces of the portcullis and the hinges of the closing gates<\/strong>, <strong>parts of the pavement of the public wash-house of San Domenico<\/strong> from the early 1900s, and the two cannons used to defend the walls and the castle, positioned there at the specific request of Sigismondo.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, <strong>Galliana Gate offers a pedestrian pathway<\/strong>, enriched by benches that make the site a resting and meeting area, a so-called new-ancient city landmark.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":13418,"template":"","poi_category":[90],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v20.13 -
